The illusion of control. It’s a desire that we have from the earliest days that we walk this earth. We want our lives to go according to what we desire.
Early in life we are devastated when our parents don’t allow us to do everything that we think is our right to do.
Why can’t I put my finger in the light socket?
Bed times? Why do we need to go to bed? We aren't tired.
Why do we have to eat that green stuff? We don't like it!
Why can’t I just run down the street by myself. I’m fine, I’ll be careful.
Why can’t I be like Billy, he can do whatever he wants?
As you got older...
Why can’t I date that guy, he is really nice. You don’t understand.
Why can’t I go to that party? Why don’t you like me hanging out with that crowd?
Why do I have to have a curfew?
While we lived at home we battled our parents for control. We wanted to do what we wanted to do. They didn’t understand us. They didn’t understand what was best for us. We knew better.
Then we move on from home and now our lives will go exactly how we want them to go. The illusion of control continues, but now we realize that it is not just our parents that limit life going how we want it. In fact we find out that life is full of disappointments of things we had hoped for that do not come to pass.
We begin to realize that try as hard as we might we are not in control of many things in our lives. In fact we have a Biblical view of life when we realize that we really are not in control of anything.
We might live under the illusion that we are in control of our health. If we just eat these foods and do these exercises and handle our stress well then we will live a long life. Many have found that it is simply not true and out of nowhere they find out that despite all that they have done their health is not good and that life will not be near as long as they had hoped.
There are others who are under the illusion that they are in control of their occupation. If you just work hard and be better than the rest then you will never need to worry about work. Sure there are others who are out of work, but that’s because they are just not as good as you are. There are many who have realized that having work wasn’t ultimately under their control.
Now those things like working hard and eating healthy are good things to do, but we are mistaken if we think that we are in control of our lives. The list is long of the things that we once thought that we had control over. This is the illusion of control.
So who is in control? Is there anyone who is in control or have we arrived on this 3rd rock from the sun randomly?
Life somehow miraculously started with a bang, but there is no one who is in control. Life is just random and its up to you to make life what you can make it.
Or do you believe that this earth arrived, because a Creator spoke it into existence? Do you believe that God is in control of what happens in your life or are you in control?
"Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them." (Psalm 139:16)
“You and I must rest in the fact that every situation, circumstance, location, experience, and relationship of your life has been under the wise and careful administration of the Lord Almighty. He has known from the beginning exactly what he was going to do and exactly why he did it. From his vantage point, there are no slip-ups, no oversights, no accidents, no misunderstandings, and no mistakes. Nothing has fallen through the cracks.” (Paul Tripp)
This should be a great encouragement to you and I. In this past Sunday’s message we saw that no matter what hour we find ourselves in, God is in control. From His vantage point…no accidents, no oversights, no slip-ups. He is in control and He rules over His creation with love and justice.
